"Little Fox wallet app official website" Reserve Bank of New Zealand Stresses 'Caution' in Crypto, Stablecoin Space

2023 07/18

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) has made clear its stance on its regulatory approach to cryptocurrencies and stablecoins. In a statement released Friday, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand acknowledged that stablecoins and other private currency innovations pose significant risks and opportunities.

A few days ago, a New Zealand travel company disclosed that it lost $2 million in cryptocurrency transactions.

Ian Woolford, director of money and cash at Tari Moni Whai Take, has released a submission abstract for an early paper on the future of money. The official noted that innovations in cryptocurrencies present significant risks and opportunities.

Woolford also highlighted that there is considerable uncertainty about how the industry will develop. Still, the official hinted at the optimal balance between innovation and regulation and that evolution.

The statement comes shortly after New Zealand-based ethical travel company We Are Bamboo reportedly used customer funds for cryptocurrency transactions. Funds for prepaid travel were traded across multiple platforms and $2 million was lost.

Woolford said,

[We also agree that global harmonization is essential to ensure effective regulation. Best practice is likely to become clearer as overseas regimes are implemented."

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand agreed that while supervisory measures may not be necessary at this time, vigilance is crucial.

A Balanced Approach to Encryption

A key conclusion drawn from the submissions is the need for enhanced data and monitoring to build a comprehensive understanding of private funding. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand advocates consistency in supervisory approaches across agencies and jurisdictions.

"We will continue to work with other agencies, notably through the Committee of Financial Regulators, to support the healthy growth of the financial ecosystem and continue to engage with industry and other stakeholders where issues arise."

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand's statement underlined warnings that global regulatory regimes are shifting around the world. The U.S. has been at the center of enforcement action against cryptocurrency businesses.

American businessman Mark Cuban recently advocated for simplification around a framework that could regulate the virtual asset class.

Meanwhile, New Zealand has implemented stricter regulations, focusing on FATF`s anti-money laundering measures and KYC norms. While intended to prevent illicit activity and protect consumers, the current rules do not promote the long-term stability and legitimacy of cryptocurrency markets in many jurisdictions.
